Positioned just off the vibrant Gloucester Road, we visit homeowners Sarah and Matt in their Horfield home to discuss how they created their own eclectic oasis, transforming their home over the years. We sit down with the couple to chat about all things renovations, interiors, and design.
“We raised our family in Downend for twenty-three years, it’s a great place for a growing family. But as the kids got older, we wanted to be closer to the excitement of Gloucester Road and we also have friends in the area”, explains Sarah.
“It’s really lovely to have Gloucester Road on our doorstep, we can walk to Kandyan, a delicious Sri Lankan restaurant in two minutes, as well as being close to the outside space of Horfield Common. We really do have the best of both worlds, close to restaurants and bars, but a good distance from the centre to still be able to have a great amount of space.”
It's clear to see that the house itself has been through a comprehensive and impressive transformation since Sarah and Matt purchased it five years ago.
“The previous owner lived here for about 50 years. We had a vision; the house wasn’t in the best shape, but we could see the potential. We have friends who are architects and property developers, so we were very fortunate to get the help we needed.”, says Matt.
“The house was very run down, so we decided to completely re-structure. When we purchased it, we moved into a flat just around the corner whilst the builders worked on the house for the first six months. We re-configured the layout of the house, re-arranged rooms by knocking down walls and all ceilings to make the house flow better, this included moving the kitchen and even moving the entrance to the house. We also completely re-wired, put in a new plumbing system, installed soundproof and thermal boarding to the walls prior to plastering, and levelled the flooring.”, Matt describes.
Whilst Sarah gives us the tour of their home, she points out unique artwork pieces from friends and artists she likes, we ask her inspiration behind the vibrant interior choices.
“Our one rule was to not copy the decoration of our previous home. It’s far too easy to get stuck in the same style, so we wanted a completely new look.”, Sarah explains.
“We put a colour scheme on the wall to visualise the flow and coordination of the house and worked with Rosie from Rose & Black who decorated everything. We’ve worked with her before, and she understands your vision, she’s the best and we trust her 100%!”, adds Sarah.
As keen cyclists, the couple are looking to move onwards to a detached property around the Failand area, close to the cycling, walking, and running routes, where they can enjoy a bit more outside space.
“We’ve got everything in the house perfect and just how we envisioned it – this is what will make it so hard to leave, but it’s time for a new project and change of scenery.”
