When graphic designer and exhibition curator Barney Beech and acclaimed author Charlotte Philby first saw 17 Midland Road, they knew it could be something amazing. Neglected and in a state of disrepair, the former pub turned squat turned homeless shelter was in serious need of restoration–and the couple had the creative vision to bring it back to life.
'It started with the building, falling in love with the building.'
Based in the heart of Old Market, Bristol, 17 Midland Road has been transformed into a multi-purpose community space—acting as a design studio, art gallery, and place to stay. Working collaboratively with independent artists, dealers, and gallery owners, Barney curates a mix of shows and exhibitions that spark conversation and bring art closer to the community.

Above the ground-floor gallery space sits a stylishly designed apartment that doubles as additional exhibition space and guest accommodation. Stripping the building back to its bones, Barney and Charlotte reimagined it as a contemporary yet cosy space that honours its heritage. Their design preserves the character and soul of the building while weaving in their own story, adding a new layer to its rich and varied history.
