Insiders: No5. Bristol

Back to Journal

Looking to restore some of the original features and charm of their Merchant's house in Bristol, Laura and Adam embarked on a timeless remodelling and renovation of their flat in St Pauls. We have followed Laura and Adam's renovation with huge anticipation, and were blown away with the results; a timeless design, totally befitting of the home. Hats off guys!

Laura and Adam quickly realised that working with the existing space was key to optimising their renovation. The property boasted high ceilings, providing them with an opportunity to create a distinctive feature—a sliding ladder. This innovative addition not only paid homage to the historical context of the building but also served a practical purpose in maximising storage space. By venturing upwards into the ceiling, they cleverly expanded the available storage area. Furthermore, they emphasised the importance of utilising small alcoves or niches within the space to create custom pieces that perfectly fit the dimensions and needs of the room.

Do-It-Yourself: Unleashing Your Inner Renovator

One misconception often associated with renovation projects is the need for extensive prior experience. Laura and Adam discovered that they could accomplish much of the renovation work themselves, even without any background knowledge. Their journey became an exploration of learning new skills and gaining confidence in various aspects of the project. By taking on tasks personally, they not only saved on costs but also developed a deeper connection to the space they were transforming.

"I think the design really responds to the house itself. Because the flat is small we needed to create more space for storage without impacting on the original features."

Hunt for Character: Second-Hand Furniture Finds

The couple's keen eye for sourcing unique and high-quality furniture led them on a treasure hunt through auction houses and online platforms like Facebook Marketplace. Their third tip highlights the advantages of purchasing pre-owned items, which not only align with sustainable practices but also add a distinctive charm to the home. By seeking out second-hand pieces, Laura and Adam were able to infuse their house with character and individuality, elevating the overall aesthetic appeal.

Laura and Adam's renovation journey at No.5 Bristol serves as an inspiring testament to the art of preserving historical charm while imbuing a space with personal touches.
