Scott Hills from Hills + Co Architects explains the initial concept behind this beautiful design, which focussed on creating a sympathetic yet modern rear extension that would honour and enhance the existing property.

Sitting harmoniously alongside the original architecture, the extension has created a beautifully light and balanced open-plan kitchen/living space that flows through to the enclosed garden. The dark anthracite zinc used on the exteriors echoes the slate tiles, offering another thread of stylistic continuity.
From the front of the property, it’s easy to miss the architectural delight that awaits around the back, but this is entirely intentional. The rear of the property is discreet and protected by a boundary wall, offering an opportunity to create an indoor/outdoor space for the clients to enjoy in peace and privacy.
The interior has been decorated in a modern, rustic style, with olive green cabinetry, marble worktops and layered industrial lighting. The blend of natural and modern elements gives the space a refined yet cosy feel complementary to the rest of the house.
This home may seem like a tale of two halves, but thanks to Scott’s clever architectural design, the cottage is a cohesive pairing of old and new; a beautiful example of how original features can be preserved and elevated alongside contemporary design.
